Historic Trek: UPLB Legal Office Attorney Ventures into Laguna Land Grant
In a historic and unprecedented move, Atty. Danniel James M. Ancheta, Attorney IV of the UPLB Legal Office, embarked on a memorable journey to the Laguna Land Grant (LLG) located in portions of Paete and Kalayaan in Laguna on December 12, 2023.
This groundbreaking trek marked a significant moment for the UPLB Legal Office, as Atty. Ancheta became the first lawyer from the office to explore the rugged terrains of the Laguna Land Grant on foot. The expedition was not merely an adventurous endeavor but a purposeful visit aimed at extending legal support and guidance to the UPLB Land Grant Management Office (LGMO).
Atty. Ancheta’s presence in the LLG was not just a symbolic gesture; he actively engaged with the LGMO to address various concerns and legal intricacies related to the land grant. His visit allowed him to witness firsthand the ongoing developments within the area and brought attention to the pressing issue of informal settlements.
Reflecting on his observations during the trek, Atty. Ancheta shared, “During my trek at the LLG, I have observed that the terrain is primarily mountainous-forest area with sloping and numerous steep climbs and descents.” This insight into the topography highlights the challenges and unique characteristics of the LLG, emphasizing the need for careful land management.
One of the critical issues brought to light during the visit was the presence of informal settlers within the LLG. Despite the challenging terrain and the absence of access to electricity, these settlers have managed to thrive in the area. Atty. Ancheta’s firsthand experience provided valuable insights that will aid the UPLB Legal Office in addressing the legal aspects of these settlements.
The attorney’s visit signifies a commitment to holistic land management, combining legal expertise with on-the-ground awareness. As the UPLB Legal Office continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the university’s interests, Atty. Danniel James M. Ancheta’s trek into the portions of Paete and Kalayaan in Laguna serves as a pioneering example of proactive legal engagement in addressing the multifaceted challenges associated with land management and development.
