Who We Are
History
The Legal Office, as we know it now, originated from a small seed planted on September 21, 1959, when the then UP College of Agriculture (UPCA) appointed Atty. Severino P. Sanchez as its Administrative and Legal Officer.

What We Do
- The following are the functions of the Legal Office:
- To provide and render legal opinion, advice and assistance to the Chancellor and to other officials of UPLB;
- To appear before the courts or administrative agencies in appropriate cases;
- To prepare, draft and/or review contracts, documents, agreements or undertaking wherein any college/school/unit of the U.P. Los Baños is a party;
- To attend to and/or assist in the investigation, resolution and disposition of disciplinary matters involving personnel and students or grievances of personnel of the University, upon direction of the Chancellor and;
- To perform such other functions as the Chancellor or other University authorities may assign.
Legal Chief's Purview
- The following are the main responsibilities of the Chief Legal Officer of UPLB (based on E.O. 96-01)
- a. To provide and render legal opinion, advice, and assistance to the Chancellor and to other officials of that Autonomous University and to refer requests for opinion regarding matters which have System-wide policy implications to the General Counsel for proper advice or opinion as required by University or campus officials;
- b. To handle the following judicial cases involving the operations of the Autonomous University: ejectment unlawful detainee, forcible entry, breach of contract, specific performance, correction of entries in civil Registries, violation of the Anti-Squatting law, and other laws;
- c. To prepare drafts and/or documents, agreements, or undertakings involving the Autonomous University or any of its colleges, schools, or units provided that in areas where pertinent issuances of other government agencies mentioned in Section 2 (g) of this Executive Order may affect such contracts, documents, agreements, or undertakings, the CLO should brief and refer the matter to the General Counsel for proper advice and coordination in keeping with UP System policies on the subject matter under consideration;
- d. To assist the Chancellor or the Executive Committee of their respective Autonomous Universities in the investigation, resolution, and disposition of disciplinary matters involving Autonomous University students who are charged with violating University rules and other regulations on discipline;
- e. To assist the Chancellor of the Autonomous University in the investigation and resolution of administrative cases where the Autonomous University employees are the respondents;
- f. To perform and undertake such other functions and responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned to the Chief Legal Officers by the respective Chancellors concerning legal matters affecting the Autonomous Universities;
- g. In all matters affecting the Autonomous University that require legal opinion/comment and are endorsed/referred by the Chancellor concerned to the President for appropriate action, the comments/recommendation of the Chief Legal Officer shall form part of the basic papers to be transmitted by the Chancellor;
- h. To course any and all reports on judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings and cases affecting their campus that are being handled by their office to their respective Chancellors and to the President through the General Counsel, who shall prepare official and consolidated reports thereon as the President and the Board may require from time to time;
- i. To render a quarterly status report of all judicial, quasi judicial, administrative and student disciplinary cases handled beginning 30 March 1996.
